Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food Supply has enacted Technical Regulation No. 47⁄2018 for Sugar.
This Regulation establishes the standard requirements, identity, quality, sampling, mode of presentation, marking and labeling, of sugars of different classifications. The Regulation provides the following requirements:
- Classification and tolerances of sugars are elaborated under Chapter II with quality parameters in table form in Annex I, II, III and IV, of this Technical Regulation.
- Packaging to be used for packed sugar must be of appropriate materials with specification, preparation and capacity in accordance with specific legislation.
- The marking and labeling of the product must be visible, legible and indelible, bearing the requirements specified in Chapter VI of this Regulation.
- A period of one year from the validity of this Regulation is given to the manufacturers to exhaust their current packaged sugar, after which all sugars to be distributed in Brazil must be in accordance with this Regulation. The classes and type of sugar must be in accordance with this Regulation not later than July 1, 2019.
The Regulation was enforced on October 6, 2018.
This Technical Regulation revokes Technical Regulation No. 42 of 13 November 2017.
