On April 10th, 2018, California’s Assembly’s Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials Committee has approved Assembly Bill 2998 Juvenile Products: Flame Retardant Materials by a 5–2 vote. The Bill will be headed to the Appropriations Committee for further evaluation.

This would ban the sale of children’s products, mattresses and upholstered furniture containing -or with a constituent component containing – the chemicals at levels above 1,000 ppm. It covers all flame retardant substances.

This would also require manufacturers of upholstered furniture to disclose whether their products contain flame retardants.

If approved, the bill will be enforced beginning January 1st, 2020.
