The Canada Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has released the proposed Safe Food for Canadians Regulations 2018.

The proposed regulation creates food inspection regulations with consistent, internationally recognized requirements for all food commodities imported or traded inter-provincially. Specifically, the regulation consolidates Canada Agricultural Products Act, the Fish Inspection Act, the Meat Inspection Act, and the food-related provisions of the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Regulations.

The proposed regulations contain 17 parts and would include requirements regarding the following: Trade; Licences; Preventive Control Measures; Traceability; Commodity-specific Requirements; Recognition of Foreign Systems; Ministerial Exemptions; Inspection Legends; Packaging; Labelling; Grades and Grade Names; Seizure and Detention; and Organic Product.

The proposed regulation was released on January 9, 2018. Final publication of the regulations in the Canada Gazette, Part II is anticipated in Spring 2018.
