The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has implemented SOR/2018–108, Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (SFCR) which came into force on January 15, 2019.

The newly consolidated regulations will require food businesses that import or prepare food for export or to be sent across provincial or territorial borders to have licenses, as well as preventive controls that outline steps to address potential risks to food safety.

By consolidating 14 sets of existing food regulations into a single set of regulations, the SFCR

  • improves consistency of rules across all types of foods, and between food businesses
  • reduces administrative burden, and
  • enables food businesses to be innovative through outcome-based provisions
