The European Commission (EC) has opened an evaluation initiative to assess the current legislative framework for food contact materials (FCM). FCMs are currently regulated under Regulation (EC) No 19352004 or the FCM Regulation.

FCMs are all materials that come into contact with food including packaging as well as everyday items such as kitchen and tableware and those used in professional food manufacturing, preparation, storage and distribution.

This evaluation will assess the overall effectiveness of the FCM Regulation and its efficiency, relevance, coherence with other chemicals and food legislation, and EU added value of the FCM Regulation.

EC is gathering public comments on the evaluation until May 6, 2019.
