The European Commission (EC) has published Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2018775 Laying Down Rules for the Application of Article 26(3) of Regulation (EU) No 11692011 on the Provision of Food Information to Consumers, as Regards the Rules for Indicating the Country of Origin or Place of Provenance of the Primary Ingredient of a Food.

This Regulation provides the requirements for the indication of country of origin of food. The country of origin or the place of provenance of a primary ingredient which is not the same as the given country of origin or the given place of provenance of the food must be indicated as any of the following:

  • with reference to one of the geographical areas in Article 2(a);
  • or stated as follows: ‘(name of the primary ingredient) do/does not originate from (the country of origin or the place of provenance of the food)’ or any similar wording likely to have the same meaning for the consumer.

The manner of presentation of the information is detailed in Article 3 of this Regulation.

This Regulation was enforced on June 1, 2018. This shall apply from April 1, 2020.
