European Union: The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has submitted an intention to restrict three organophosphate flame retardants under REACH.

The three organophosphate flame retardants are:

  • tris(2-chlorethyl) phosphate (TCEP)
  • tris(2-chloro-1-methylethyl) phosphate (TCPP)
  • tris(2-chloro-1(chloromethyl)ethyl] phosphate (TDCP)

The restriction of the flame retardants is intended for flexible polyurethane (PUR) foams in child care articles and residential upholstered furniture. The restriction may also cover mattresses for adults and textiles as well as other articles.

ECHA’s screening assessment identified a risk for children from exposure to the flame retardants TCEP, TCPP and TDCP in flexible PUR foams in child care articles and upholstered furniture.

The expected date of submission of the restriction dossier is April 12, 2019.
