On September 6, 2018, the European Union (EU) initiated the implementation of Commission Regulation (EU) 2018213 on the use of bisphenol A (BPA) in varnishes and coatings intended to come into contact with food.

The Regulation tightens the restriction on the use of bisphenol A (BPA) in food contact materials by lowering the specific migration limit (SML) of BPA from 0.6 mg of BPA per kg of food to 0.05 mg/kg. The Regulation also prohibits the use of BPA in polycarbonate drinking cups or bottles intended for infants and young children, up to three years old.

This Regulation was enacted on February 12, 2018.
