The European Commission (EC) has proposed to amend regulation on plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food.

The draft regulation, Commission Regulation amending Commission Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 on plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food amends Annex I to Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 to add the following substances:

  • monomer 2,4,4-trifluorobenzophenone;
  • monomer 2,3,3,4,4,5,5-heptafluoro-1-pentene;
  • tungsten oxide; and
  • mixture of methyl-branched and linear C(14)-C(18) alkanamides, derived from fatty acids.

The proposed amendments also extends the authorization for new uses, with new set concentration limits of the following:

  • butadiene;
  • styrene;
  • methyl methacrylate; and
  • butyl acrylate.

The consultation for the draft is open until October 29, 2017.
