Italy has released Dispositions concerning the Ban on Certain Plastics in Sticks for Cleaning the Ears and Rinse-off Cosmetics.

This law bans the production and marketing of sticks for cleaning the ears that have the support of plastic or in non-biodegradable and compostable material, and rinse-off cosmetic products containing microplastics. This law indicates the following:

  • From January 1, 2019 it is forbidden to market and produce on the national territory sticks for cleaning the ears that have the support of plastic or in a non-biodegradable material according to UNI EN 13432:2002 [transposition of EN 13432:2000] and it is mandatory to indicate, on the packaging of the sticks, clear information on the correct disposal of the sticks themselves, explicitly mentioning the ban on throwing them into toilets and drains.
  • From January 1, 2020 it is forbidden to market rinse-off cosmetic products with exfoliating or detergent action containing microplastics.

The ban will be published in the Italian Official Journal.
