Japan has released a draft guideline on food equipment and containers and packaging. The draft is currently under public consultation and will close on February 28, 2019.
The guideline provides the requirements for evaluating raw materials used for food equipment, containers and packaging by establishing the concepts and method of evaluation and the range of materials required for evaluation. It aims to ensure fairness and transparency of evaluations and to clarify the data necessary for evaluation in accordance with Food Safety Basic Law.
According to the guidelines, depending on the dietary concentration classification of the target substance and various toxicity tests required, the evaluation must be based on the requirements outlined in Chapter 1, Section 4, Article 2.
The scope of the guideline mainly focuses on food equipment, containers and packaging made of synthetic resin or plastic.
