Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) is set to enforce Amendment to Food Sanitation Act on the Sanitary Regulations for Food Utensils, Containers and Packaging on June 13, 2020.

This Regulation sets a management (positive list) system that allows only substances whose safety is evaluated to be used for utensils, containers and packaging for food and food additives.

Food business operators (FBOs) associated with these products must not sell those made of raw materials, such as synthetic resins, for which specifications are not established, except those that the MHLW specifies as having no risk to human health.
