On December 13th, 2018, Mexico’s Ministry of Health has enacted NOM-189-SSA1/SCFI-2018 Technical Regulation on the Labeling and Packaging for Household Cleaning Products.

This Technical Regulation establishes the health and commercial information requirements for the labels of household cleaning products. The labels or packaging of household cleaning products must be properly indicated the type of substances they contain and the correct way to use them. Specific labeling requirements are laid out in Article 6 of this Technical Regulation.

The packaging of the products covered by this Standard must comply with the following:

  • As stated in Article 7, products that represent a health risk due to their toxic, corrosive or flammable actions must have safety devices and be contained in child-resistant containers. The solid flavorings or deodorant tablets must have a primary container that is made of a resistant material that does not allow it to be easily opened by children or have a secondary container for commercialization.

This Regulation will be enforced on December 13th, 2019.
