The Ministry of Economy of Mexico has enforced NOM-212-SCFI-2017 Technical Regulation on Primary Batteries and Batteries-Maximum Permissible Limits of Mercury and Cadmium-Specifications, Test Methods and Labeling on September 28, 2018.

This Technical Regulation lays down the maximum levels of mercury, cadmium and lead present in batteries and dry cells. This also prohibits the import and marketing of batteries and dry batteries containing mercury oxide. The maximum permissible limits of substances considered hazardous are laid out in Article 5 and shown in Table 2 of this Technical Regulation.

  • Mercury (5 ppm)
  • Cadmium (20 ppm)

The labeling requirements on the container, packaging or body of batteries are specified in Article 6.
