New Zealand’s Ministry of Environment has begun the enforcement of Waste Minimization (Microbeads) Regulations 2017 on June 7, 2018.
The Regulation prohibits the sale and manufacture of wash-off products that contain plastic microbeads for the purposes of exfoliation, cleaning, abrasive cleaning or visual appearance of the product.
Wash-off products that contain microbeads (such as facial and body exfoliates, toothpastes and heavy-duty hand cleansers) with 1 or more of the following purposes:
- exfoliation of all or part of a person’s body,
- cleaning of all or part of a person’s body,
- abrasive cleaning of any area, surface, or thing,
- visual appearance of the product.
This Regulation was enacted on December 14, 2017.
