The City and Country of San Francisco Board of Supervisors has passed File #: 170867 Ordinance Amending to Ban the Sale of Upholstered Furniture and Juvenile Products Made with or containing an Added Flame Retardant Chemical.
This Ordinance bans the sale of upholstered furniture and juvenile products that contain any chemical flame retardants above 1,000 parts per million. Stores must ensure that furniture and children’s products have a label on the products which state that the item does not contain the flame retardants. For juvenile products, stores may demonstrate compliance by obtaining a letter from the manufacturer stating that the products do not contain flame retardant chemicals. These provisions go into effect July 1, 2019 for products with electrical or electronic components, and January 1, 2019 for all other products.
Stores may petition the Department of Environment to waive the requirements if there is a proven financial hardship or difficulty in complying with the ordinance.
The Ordinance was filed on October 3, 2017.
