On December 19th, the European Commission (EC), the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union reached a provisional political agreement on the new measures proposed by the Commission to tackle marine litter at its source, targeting in particular various single-use plastic products most often found on our beaches as well as abandoned fishing gear.
The next steps are to reach a formal agreement on a specific text of the Directive, the formal approval of such text both by the parliament and by the council, and finally the publication of the new Directive in the EU Official Journal.
Aside from this, the United Nation has published a document which is a global regulatory review of laws/regulations concerning single-use plastics and microplastics. Such review showed that most countries of the world have adopted laws/regulations targeting certain single-use plastics and/or microplastics.
