On August 31, 2018, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) has released MFDS Notification No. 2018–368 for the Proposed Amendments to the Standards and Specifications for Food Utensils, Containers and Packages.

This notification aims to strengthen the safety requirement of utensils, containers and packaging intended for children and infants.

The amendment includes:

  • Prohibition of the use of bisphenol A (BPA), di-n-butylphthalate (DBP) and benzyl-n-butylphthalate (BBP) in food utensils, containers and packages for infants and young children
  • Modification of the specification for polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), and
  • Modification of the wording for recycled synthetic resins

MFDS will be accepting comments until October 30, 2018.
