South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy has published Notice No. 2019-201 to amend the Common Safety Standard for Children’s Products.
The following revisions shall be phased in from June 3rd, 2020, six (6) months after the notification:
- Requirements for phthalate plasticizers (DEHP, DBP, BBP, DINP, DIDP, DnOP) shall apply to synthetic resin products regardless of whether it is designed for use in the mouth (including coatings on textiles or leathers). The total content of the six phthalates shall not exceed 0.1 % (effective June 3rd, 2020)
- Lead content limit shall be reduced from 300 mg/kg to 100 mg/kg (effective December 3rd, 2020). The total lead and cadmium content limits shall not apply to textiles
- Newly added requirements for nitrosamines and nitrosatable substances for elastomeric children’s products that are designed for use in or put into the mouth (effective December 3rd, 2020)
“Children’s product” means a product intended for children of 13 years of age or below. It shall not include drugs, medical devices, cosmetics, food containers, food packaging, amusement facilities and equipment.
