U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has proposed a rulemaking to revise the type size labeling requirements for front of package (FOP) calorie declarations for packaged food sold from glass front vending machines.

The proposal specifies the following:

  • Nutrition information must include the total calories of food. It must be labeled in a visible, clear and conspicuous manner.
  • The type size must be at least 150 percent of the size of the net quantity declaration of contents on the front part of the package. It must also be in a color that is contrasting to the background of the label.

The proposal is open for public consultation until September 25, 2018.
