On August 30, 2018, Uruguay’s Ministry of Health has enacted Decree No. 272⁄2018 on Food Labeling.
This Decree establishes the labeling requirements of food products manufactured, consumed and distributed within the national territory of Uruguay. Specific requirements are:
- The criteria to define excess sodium, sugars, fats and saturated fats are set forth in Annexes II and III of this Decree.
- The labeling requirements to be incorporated in the front of packaged food products must comply with the provisions of Annex IV of this Decree.
This Decree applies to ready-to-eat packaged foods, with the exemption of food for medicinal use, food for diets, dietary supplements and for athletes, formula for infants and boys and girls up to 36 months, and table sweeteners.
